This Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, we’re setting out on a roadtrip that’ll take us to: New York, New Jersey, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and into Mexico.

The trip started as an adventure and a move, to bring some stuff -including the 1992 Subaru we’ve dubbed El Rayo Blanco or The White Lightning- to Mexico City, our current residence. But in such a momentous time, less than a hundred days before the presidential election, it would be a pity not to take advantage of this trip to talk about it with Americans.

Since my interest as a journalist has been Latino issues, I decided to concentrate on Latino voters -and also those who won’t vote-. This year they will be more important than ever and we want to know what they have to say.

For the next couple of weeks and beyond, I’ll be posting stories and multimedia content about this trip and its protagonists, to add a few more voices to the debate on this historic election. Este lunes 4 de agosto de 2008 partimos en un viaje en auto que nos llevará a través de Nueva York, Nueva Jersey, Virginia, Carolina del Norte y del Sur, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas… hasta México.

El viaje nació como una aventura y una mudanza, porque queríamos traer algunas cosas a México, donde vivimos desde hace pocos meses. (Entre esas pertenencias está el Subaru 1992 al que llamamos con cariño El Rayo Blanco o The White Lightning). Pero sería un desperdicio no aprovechar el viaje en un momento histórico como éste, a menos de cien días de la elección presidencial, para hablar con los estadounidenses sobre la votación.

Como periodista, me he interesado siempre en temas relacionados con los latinos. Por eso, decidí concentrarme en los latinos -votantes y no- que conoceremos en el camino. Este año, tendrán más importancia que nunca en las urnas y queremos saber qué piensan de todo esto.

Durante las próximas dos o tres semanas, publicaré aquí artículos y contenidos multimedia sobre el viaje y sus protagonistas, para agregar algunas voces más al debate sobre esta histórica elección.
